Teaching Style

Clawhammer Mike teaching a student who his playing a banjo that Mike made.

I teach students of all ages, ethnicities and abilities.  I have a nine-year-old student who can play some advanced tunes that I wouldn't teach to most adults.  I have had an eighty five-year-old student with limited mobility. I can use tab if necessary, but much of this music has been passed on through the generations aurally, and I like to continue that tradition.  Some people call it teaching knee to knee.  I especially like beginners, as I can put them on a good path from the start, before bad habits develop.  I try to identify the next hurdle that a student needs to get over and plan exercises that move them through and beyond that challenge.
